What is Abarax?
Abarax is used to treat Chagas disease. This is also known as American trypanosomiasis. Abarax contains the active ingredient Benznidazol. Benznidazol produces free radicals which kill off the parasite (Trypanosoma cruzi protozoa) that causes Chagas disease. Abarax is an anti-parasitic medication.
How is Abarax used?
Abarax is usually prescribed at the following dosages:
- In adults: 2.5mg-3.5mg per kg of body weight twice daily
- In children (12 years and under): 5mg per kg of body weight twice daily
Benznidazol is usually prescribed as a 60 day course of treatment.
Adverse effects
Skin rash and nausea are the most common side effects. These are most prevalent early in treatment and subside over time.
More serious side effects that can occur include::
- fever
- peripheral polyneuritis
- paresthesia
More rare side effects are leukopenia and agranulocytosis.

Warnings
If you have liver or kidney problems you will need close medical supervision while taking Benznidazol.
If you have blood disorders you will need close medical supervision while taking Benznidazol.
If you are pregnant, it may not be safe to take Benznidazol . Do not take Abarax during the first trimester, and take it during the 2nd and 3rd trimester only if advised to do so by your doctor. |
