What is Asacol?
Asacol containing the active ingredient mesalazine is an anti-inflammatory drug belonging to a class of medication called aminosalicylates. The medication works by stopping the body from producing a certain substance that may cause inflammation, stomach pain, rectal bleeding, tissue damage and diarrhea. It can be used to treat inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis. Some people may also use the medication in the treatment of mild to moderate Crohnís disease.
How is Asacol used?
Asacol is usually taken orally 3 times daily or as directed by a doctor. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken with some water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patientís condition and their response to the medication. The tablets should be swallowed whole and not chewed, crushed or broken to prevent the drug from being released properly into the colon.
Patients using Asacol may encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Upset stomach
- Flu like symptoms
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Dark or bloody urine
- Shortness of breath
- Black or tarry stools
- Bloody vomit
- Mental or mood changes
- Joint pain
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Asacol is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
