What is Crestor?
Crestor containing the active ingredient rosuvastatin belongs to a group of medication called HMG CoA reductase inhibitors or commonly known as statins. It works by reducing the levels of “bad” cholesterol (low density lipoprotein) and increases the levels of “good” cholesterol (high density lipoprotein). It can also be used to decrease the production of triglycerides in the blood. The medication may also be used with a proper diet, weight loss and exercise to reduce the risk of a heart attack, stroke and other heart complications.
How is Crestor used?
Crestor is usually taken orally once per day or as directed by a doctor. The tablet can be taken with or without food but should be taken along with some water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the medication. To decrease the risk of side effects, your doctor may gradually increase your dose at the start of your treatment.
Patients using Crestor may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Joint pain
- Stomach pain
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Muscle pain
- Chest pain
- Dark colored urine
- Extreme fatigue
- Signs of infection
- Mental or mood changes
Do not take the medication along with antacids containing aluminum or magnesium as it may reduce the absorption of the drug.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Crestor is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed.
