What is Lamivir?
Lamivir containing the active ingredient lamivudine is considered a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) type of medication. The medication can help decrease the amount of the HIV cells from multiplying in the body to allow the immune system to work better. The tablets should be taken with other medication to lower the chance of getting HIV complications such as AIDS, serious infections or cancer. It can be used to help treat HIV but cannot be used to cure the condition.
How is Lamivir used?
Lamivir is usually taken 1 to 2 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patientís condition and their response to the therapy. Take the medication at the same time each day as it works best when kept at a constant level in the body.
Patients using Lamiivir may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Coughing and cold like symptoms
- Stuffy nose
- Unexplained weight loss
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Lamivir is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
