What is Loxamine?
Loxamine with the active ingredient paroxetine hydrochloride is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) type of antidepressant. It prevents some natural substances in the brain from being reabsorbed back into the nerve cells to prolong its mood lightening effect. The medication can be used to treat a variety of mental conditions such as depression, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and social phobia.

How is Loxamine used?
Loxamine is an orally consumed medication that is usually taken once per day in the morning. It is recommended to take it with or after a meal to avoid an upset stomach. The tablets should be taken with a full glass of water and should be swallowed whole and not cut, crushed or chewed. The dosage will depend on the patient's condition and reaction to the treatment, contact a doctor for the correct dosage. Patients also should not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor as abruptly stopping could cause severe withdrawal symptoms.

Adverse effects
Patients using Loxamine may encounter side effects such as:

  • Headaches
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Decreased sex drive or performance

Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:

  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Hallucinations

  • Black or tarry stool
  • Restlessness
  • Muscle spasms

Warnings
The medication should not be used with patient's under 18 years of age or patients with manic depression or uncontrolled epilepsy. People who have taken any monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) antidepressants within 2 weeks should also avoid the medication.

Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.

Loxamine is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
