What is Metamide?
Metamide containing the active ingredient metoclopramide hydrochloride is considered an anti-emetic or prokinetic agent type of medication. The medication works by increasing muscle contractions in the upper digestive tract to speed the movement of food through the stomach and intestines. It is a short term relief (4 to 12 weeks) to treat heartburn and speed up the healing process of ulcers and sores in the esophagus in patients suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Patients diagnosed with diabetes may also use the tablets to treat poor emptying of their stomachs (gastroparesis), which can cause nausea, vomiting, heartburn, loss of appetite and feeling of fullness that lasts long after meals.
How is Metamide used?
Metamide is usually taken 3 to 4 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The tablets should be taken on an empty stomach at least 30 minutes prior to any meals and before bedtime. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patientís condition and their response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor as it may cause the symptoms to return.
Patients using Metamide may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Breast tenderness or swelling
- Changes in menstrual period
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Muscle stiffness
- Decrease sex drive or performance
- Mask like appearance in your face
- Mental or mood changes
- Sleeping problems
The medication should not be taken for more than 12 weeks.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
