Nilol (Nifedipine/Atenolol) 20mg/50mg (10 Tablets)
Brand Name: Nilol
Generic Name: Nifedipine/Atenolol
Form: Tablets
Manufacturer: Intas Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

What is Nilol?
Nilol contains 2 active ingredients, nifedipine a calcium channel blocker and atenolol a beta blocker type of medication. Nifedipine works by relaxing and widening blood vessels to reduce the energy required by the heart to pump blood around the body. Atenolol can reduce the action of certain substances on the heart and making the heart beat more slowly and with less force. The tablets can be used to prevent chest pain (angina) and treat high blood pressure (hypertension) which can reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes and kidney diseases.

How is Nilol used?
Nilol is usually taken orally 1 to 2 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken along with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. The tablets should be swallowed whole and not chewed, crushed or split to prevent too much of the medication from being released at one time. Do not discontinue the medication without consulting a doctor, even if you feel well, as hypertension usually has no visible symptoms.

Adverse effects
Patients using Nilol may encounter unwanted side effects such as:

  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Flushing
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Upset stomach
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Swelling of the ankles and legs

Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:

  • Oedema
  • Decrease in sex drive or performance
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Vision problems
  • Mental or mood changes
  • Tremors

Warnings
It is recommended to avoid consuming grapefruits and grapefruit juice as it can increase the level of nifedipine in the blood and increase the chance of side effects.

Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.

Nilol is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.

The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed.
