What is Osteofos?
Osteofos containing the active ingredient alendronate sodium is considered a bisphosphonates type of medication. The medication works by increasing bone density and preventing bone breakdown which may prevent bone fractures. It is used to treat or prevent osteoporosis in patients taking corticosteroids and also by women who have undergone menopause. Some people may also use the tablets to treat Paget’s disease of bone.

How is Osteofos used?
Osteofos is usually taken orally once per day or as directed by a doctor. The tablets should be taken in the morning with a full glass of water, at least 30 minutes prior to eating breakfast. Try to remain in an upright position and not lie down or recline until after eating the first food of the day. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. The tablets should be swallowed whole and not split chewed, crushed or sucked on.

Adverse effects
Patients using Osteofos may encounter unwanted side effects such as:

  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Excess gas
  • Bloating
  • Headaches

Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:

  • Jaw, joint, bone or muscle pain
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Black, tarry or bloody stools
  • Swelling of hands, ankles or feet
  • Vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • New or unusual pain in thighs or hips

Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.

Osteofos is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.

The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed.
