What is Prilium?
Prilium containing the active ingredient imidapril is considered an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor type of medication for dogs. The oral solution can be used to treat moderate to severe heart failure caused by dilated cardiomyopathy or mitral regurgitation in dogs weighing over 4kg. The medication works by acting through the kidneys to reduce the load on the heart and allow the blood to flow easier around the body.
How is Prilium used?
Prilium is an orally administered medication given once daily to the pet unless otherwise directed by a veterinarian. The vial containing the powder should be opened and filled with tap water up to the mark of 30ml. Screw the child proof cap on tightly and gently shake the vial to mix the medication thoroughly before each application. The solution should be introduced into the syringe and administered directly into the mouth on an empty stomach or given with their pet food. The usual recommended dosage is 0.25mg/kg of the pet’s weight. Contact a veterinarian for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the pet’s weight, condition and their response to the therapy.
Adverse effects
Prilium may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Diarrhea
- Hypotension
- Excessive fatigue
- Dizziness
- Anorexia
- Vomiting
Contact a veterinarian immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Warnings
The vials should be stored in the fridge after each daily application.
Immediately proceed to the veterinarian if your pet suffers an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Prilium is not always suitable for all animals. Always consult your veterinarian prior to using this medication if your pet is pregnant, breastfeeding, breeding, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if it has any allergies or other health problems.
