What is Procur?
Procur is an antiadrogen. The generic name of Procur is Cyproterone Acetate. Each tablet contains 50mg of the active ingredient Cyproterone Acetate. Procur is a an antiandrogen which blocks or inhibits the male sex hormones. This can help in the treatment of of unoperable prostate cancer, hirsutism in women, to decrease excessive sex drive in males. It is also used in transgender hormone therapy.

Procur (Cyproterone Acetate) has to mechanisms of action. It is an androgen inhibitor, meaning it prevent the androgens from binding to cell receptors. It also affects hormonal mechanisms that trigger adrogen production, reducing the amount of male sex hormones in the blood.

How is Procur used?
Procur will be prescribed at different dosages for different treatments. Follow the dosage instructions given by your doctor. Procur wil usually be taken daily, except when taken by women who will take it on certain daya within the menstrual cycle.

Recommended starting dosages are usually:

  • For prostate cancer in males: 50mg - 300mg daily
  • For reducing excessive sex drive in males: 50mg twice daily
  • For reducing excessive body hair in females: 100mg per day from Day 1 to Day 10 of the menstrual cycle (taken in conjuction with a contraceptive pill)

Adverse effects
Procur (Cyproterone Acetate) is well tolerated by most people, however some people will experience some unwanted side effects due to Procur. Some side effects are more common than others and do not represent a great risk. Other side effects are more rare and may indicate a bigger problem..

The following side effects are common and are usually mild and temporary. Tell your doctor if you experience these and they become troublesome to you.

  • tiredness or weakness
  • depresssion
  • temporary inner restlessness
  • changes in body weight

The followingside effects are rare, and could may need medical intervention. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice:

  • stomach discomfort or pain
  • shortness of breath
  • yellow skin and/or eyes (jaundice)
  • dark coloured urine
  • persistent or recurrent bleeding occurring at irregular intervals

Warnings
Cyproterone Acetate can present a risk to certain people. Some pre-exisiting conditions can prevent Cyproterone Acetate from working as intended. Let you doctor know if you belong to any of the following categories:

  • are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • have any form of liver disease
  • have jaundice or have had it in the past
  • have herpes or have had it in the past
  • have suffered depression or other mental illness
  • have experienced blood clots
  • suffer from diabetes
  • have an abnormal red blood cell count
