What is Prothiaden?
Prothiaden with the active ingredient dothiepin is considered a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA). It works by preventing the natural substances serotonin and noradrenaline from being reabsorbed into the nerve cells to prolong their mood lightening effect. The medication is relatively mild and can be used to treat low levels of anxiety, depression and chronic pain disorders. It can cause drowsiness as a side effect and may be most useful in treating depression in people who are anxious, agitated or suffer from disturbances in sleep.

How is Prothiaden used?
Prothiaden should be taken orally 1 to 3 times daily or as directed by a doctor. To prevent an upset stomach it is advised to take the medication with or just after a meal. The recommended dosage will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s reaction to the medication, contact a doctor for the correct dosage. It is also not advised to stop the medication without consulting a doctor as it may cause severe withdrawal symptoms.

Adverse effects
Prothiaden may cause side effects in patients such as:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headaches
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Constipation

Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:

  • Blurred vision
  • Urinary retention
  • Tremors
  • Decreased sex drive or performance
  • Hypotension
  • Confusion
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Seizures

Warnings
The medication should not be taken within 2 weeks of stopping any monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) antidepressant or co-administered with any selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) as it may cause drug interactions.

Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.

Prothiaden is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
