What is Protopic Ointment?
Protopic Ointment containing the active ingredient tacrolimus monohydrate belongs to a group of medication known as topical calcineurin inhibitors (TCI). It works by decreasing cell activity in the immune system which helps slow down the growth of atopic dermatitis on the skin. It is used, when other treatments have proven unsuccessful, to treat moderate to severe symptoms of eczema such as itching, redness and inflammation of the skin.
How is Protopic Ointment used?
Protopic Ointment is usually applied topically twice daily or as directed by a doctor. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the medication. Wash and dry the affected area with soap prior to applying the medication. To apply the ointment, spread a thin layer of the medication on the affected area and gently massage the ointment into the skin completely. Wash your hands immediately after applying the ointment unless they are part of the affected area.
Adverse effects
Patients using Protopic Ointment may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Stinging, burning, soreness or itching at site of application
- Acne
- Cold and flu symptoms
- Headaches
- Increased sensitivity of the skin to hot or cold temperatures
- Folliculitis
- Upset stomach
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Extreme fatigue
- Joint or muscle pain
- Chest pain
- Signs of skin infections or sores
- Swollen glands
- Difficulty breathing
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Protopic Ointment is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
