What is Minirin?
Minirin containing the active ingredient desmopressin is considered a type of vasopressin analogue used as a hormone replacement. The man made hormone is used to help balance the amount of water and salt in the body by preventing excessive amounts of water from being filtered out of the blood and into the urine. The medication can be used to treat diabetes insipidus, a condition where the body is not functioning properly and produces an abnormally large amount of urine. Some patients may also use the drug to treat bedwetting.

How is Minirin used?
Minirin is usually taken orally 2 to 3 times per day or as directed by a doctor. When used to treat bedwetting, take the tablet once per day at bedtime. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with some water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the therapy. For the best results, monitor and reduce water and other fluids intake while using the drug.

Adverse effects
Patients using Minirin may encounter unwanted side effects such as:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Headaches
  • Diarrhea
  • Weight gain
  • Stomach pain
  • Hallucinations
  • Mental or mood changes

Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.

Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.

Minirin is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.

The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed.
