What is Accupril?
Accupril can be used alone or along with other medication to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and heart failure. The active ingredient quinapril is considered an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor type of medication. The medication can help the heart pump blood more efficiently by decreasing certain chemicals that cause the blood vessels to tighten up and allowing for smoother blood flow.

How is Accupril used?
Accupril is usually taken orally 1 to 2 times daily or as directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with plenty of water throughout the treatment. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the treatment without consulting a doctor as it may take up to several weeks before the full effects of the drug are felt.

Adverse effects
Accupril may cause unwanted side effects such as:

  • Vomiting
  • Dry cough
  • Diarrhea
  • Headaches
  • Excessive fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Upset stomach
  • Dizziness

Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:

  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Change in the amount of urine
  • High potassium blood levels
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Jaundice
  • Signs of infection
  • Fainting

Warnings
The medication can help treat heart conditions but cannot be used to cure them.

Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.

Accupril is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.

The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed.
