What is Ramipres?
Ramipres works by reducing certain natural substance in the body to allow the blood vessels to relax and allow blood to flow more smoothly and the heart to pump blood more efficiently. The active ingredient ramipril belongs to a class of medications called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. The medication is mainly prescribed in the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure) to reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes and kidney problems. It can also be used to prevent heart failure in patients who have recently had a heart attack and to protect the kidneys from harm caused by diabetes.
How is Ramipres used?
Ramipres should only be used as advised by a doctor, usually 1 to 2 times daily. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with plenty of water throughout the treatment. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient's response to the therapy. Your health care provider may start you on a low dose and gradually increase your dosage to avoid unwanted side effects.
Ramipres may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Signs of infection
- High potassium blood levels
- Upset stomach
- Dry cough
- Excessive fatigue
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Ramipres is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
