What is Alizin?
Alizin is an emergency contraceptive for dogs. The active ingredient is Aglepristone. It is used to terminate unwanted pregnancy in dogs within the first 45 days after mating. Alizin works by blocking progesterone, which results in the loss of pregnancy.

How is Alizin used?
Alizin is packaged as a 10mL vial, with 30mg/mL of the active ingredient Aglepristone.

Alizin is to be given as subcutaneous injection. The recommended dosage is 10mg (0.33mL) per kg of bodyweight (to a maximum of 5mL). This dosage will need to be injected twice, 24 hours apart.

Abortion or resorption will usually occur within 7 days after the injection.

Adverse effects
Alizin can result in the following side effects in dogs:

  • anorexia
  • excitations
  • depression
  • diarrhea
  • vomitting
  • pain and/or inflammation at the injection site
  • haematological changes including neutrophilia, neutropaenia, thrombocytosis, haematocrit variation, lymphocytosis, lymphopaenia
  • biochemical changes such as changes in urea, creatinine, chloride, potassium, sodium, ALT, ALP, AST

Adverse effects
Avoid the use of Alizin until after the end of oestrus and avoid new mating before the end of oestrus. This is to minimize the possibility of lack of expected efficacy,

In some cases, the dog will have a partial abortion. You will need your vet to check that a full abortion has occured, as subsequent treatments may be required if the pregnancy has not been aborted.

Alizin is for treatment of dogs only. It must not be taken by humans. Pregnant women must exercise caution when administering Alizin.

Alizin should not be given to dogs with impaired hepatic function or impaired renal function. Alizin should not be given to dogs with manifest or latent hypoadrenocorticism (Addison’s disease) or in dogs with a genetic predisposition to hypoadrenocorticism.
