What is Aromasin?
Aromasin containing the active ingredient exemestane belongs to a type of medications called aromatase inhibitors. The medication is used to treat certain types of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. It works by decreasing the amount of estrogen produced by the body to slow or reverse the growth of tumors that are sensitive to estrogen. The drug should be used when other types of treatment such as radiation, surgery or other medications have been proven unsuccessful.
How is Aromasin used?
Aromasin is usually taken orally once per day or as directed by a doctor. The medication should be taken with a meal along with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patientís condition and their response to the therapy. Continue with the treatment even if you feel well as some patients may be required to take the medication for several years or longer.
Patients using Aromasin may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Hot flashes
- Hair loss
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Increased sweating
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Vision problems
- Mental or mood changes
- Joint or muscle pain
- Bone pain or fractures
- Sleep problems
- Chest pain
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Aromasin is not always suitable for all patients.
