The active ingredient metoprolol succinate belongs to a class of medications called beta blockers that can affect the heart and circulation. The medication works by slowing the heart rate and relaxing blood vessels to help improve blood flow, decrease blood pressure and strain on the heart. Treating hypertension can help reduce the risk of kidney problems, heart attacks and strokes.
