What is Danogen-50?
Danogen containing the active ingredient danazol is a synthetic steroid that belongs to a class of medications called gonadotrophin inhibitors. The medication works by affecting the ovaries and pituitary gland and prevents the release of certain hormones in the body. It is used to treat endometriosis, a condition where the tissue that normally lines the womb grows on the other organs outside the womb. Some people may also use the drug to treat severe breast pain, nodules (lumps) and tenderness in benign fibrocystic breast disease as well as hereditary angioedema.
How is Danogen-50 used?
Danogen is usually taken orally twice per day or as directed by a doctor. The medication can be used with or without food but should be taken the same way each time. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patientís response to the therapy. The capsules should be swallowed whole and not split, crushed or broken to prevent too much of the drug from being released at one time.
Patients using Danogen may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Decrease in breast size
- Weight gain
- Voice changes
- Irregular menstrual cycle
- Abnormal hair growth
- Vaginal dryness, discomfort or itching
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Vision problems
- Mental or mood changes
- Decreased sex drive or performance
- Persistent headaches
- Problems breathing or swallowing
- Persistent abdominal pain
The medication should usually be started on the first day of your period unless otherwise told by a doctor.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
