What is Desowen 0.05% Lotion?
Desowen Lotion containing the active ingredient desonide is considered a topical corticosteroid type of medication. The lotion works by activating certain natural substances in the body to reduce itching, redness and swelling of the skin. The medication can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions such as allergic reactions, psoriasis and eczema. It can be used to treat the conditions but cannot be used to cure the skin conditions.
How is Desowen 0.05% Lotion used?
Desowen Lotion is generally applied topically 2 to 3 times daily or as directed by a doctor. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the therapy. Clean and dry your hands and the affected area prior to applying the medication. Shake the container well before use. Apply a thin layer of the lotion to the affected area and gently massage it in until it disappears. It is recommended to avoid wearing tight fitting clothes or wrapping the treated area with dressing unless you are instructed to do so by a doctor. Wash your hands immediately after applying the lotion unless it is part of the treated area.
Adverse effects
Patients using Desowen Lotion may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Burning, stinging, itching or redness at application site
- Dry, scaly or peeling skin
- Thinning or softening of skin
- Stretch marks
- Skin discoloration
- Acne
- Swollen hair follicles
- Excessive hair growth
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persists or worsen.
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Desowen 0.05% Lotion is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
