What is Detrusitol?
Detrusitol containing the active ingredient tolterodine L-tartrate is considered an anticholinergic or antimuscarinic muscle relaxant type of medication. The medication works by relaxing the involuntary muscle that is found in the wall of the bladder to improve the ability to control urination. It is used to control conditions of an overactive bladder such as involuntary leakage of urine (urinary incontinence), the frequency of urination and urinary urgency.
How is Detrusitol used?
Detrusitol is usually taken orally twice per day or as directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patientís condition and their response to the therapy. Do not split, chew or crush the tablets prior to consumption as it will cause too much of the drug from being released at one time.
Patients using Detrusitol may encounter side effects such as:
- Dry mouth or eyes
- Upset stomach
- Blurred vision
- Confusion or hallucinations
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Detrusitol is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed.
