What is Dostinex?
Dostinex with the active ingredient cabergoline is considered a dopamine receptor agonist. It works by reducing the amount of prolactin that is released from the pituitary gland. Decreasing the amount of prolactin in the body will decrease the amount of breast milk produced in women, treat symptoms such as infertility as well as regulating the menstrual period.
How is Dostinex used?
Dostinex is usually taken orally twice per week or as directed by a doctor. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken with some of water. Dosage will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the medication, contact a doctor for correct dosage. For maximum effectiveness, your doctor may increase your dosage gradually.
Adverse effects
Patients using Dostinex may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Upset stomach
- Constipation
- Dizziness
- Hot flashes
- Headaches
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Difficulty breathing
- Chest pain
- Decrease in urination
- Back pain
- Vision problems
- Mental or mood changes
- Fatigue
Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Dostinex is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
