What is Dutas?
Dutas containing the active ingredient dutasteride belongs to a class of medications called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. The medication can be used to reduce the size of an enlarged prostate and the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It works by preventing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The capsules can be used alone or with other medication to treat acute urinary retention and decrease the chance of prostate surgery in the future.
How is Dutas used?
Dutas is usually taken orally once per day at the same time everyday or as directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken with a glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient's condition and their response to the therapy. The capsules should be swallowed whole and not opened, crushed or chewed to prevent irritation of the mouth, lips or throat. It may take up to 6 months before the full effects of the medication are felt, consult a health care provider If symptoms do not improve after 6 months.
Patients using Dutas may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Decreased sex drive or performance
- Decreased sperm count or semen produced
- Erectile dysfunction
- Breast tenderness or enlargement
- Testicle pain or swelling
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Dutas is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed.
