What is Eltroxin-50?
Eltroxin is a replacement therapy for thyroid hormones. The active ingredient levothyroxine is used to treat a condition where the thyroid glands do not produce enough hormones on its own called hypothyroidism. Regulating hormone levels in the body can help treat symptoms such as hair loss, weight gain, lack of energy, slow speech, poor growth and dry or thick skin. Some people may also use it to prevent to treat goiters and congenital hypothyroidism.
How is Eltroxin-50 used?
Eltroxin should only be taken as directed by a doctor usually once per day. The medication should be taken on an empty stomach, 30 minutes to 1 hour before eating breakfast along with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patientís response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the treatment without consulting a doctor as some patients may need to use the medicine for a prolonged period to replace the hormone your body cannot produce.
Eltroxin may cause unwanted side effects such as:
- Weight loss
- Hair loss
- Changes in menstrual cycle
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Eltroxin-50 is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
