What is Maxalt Melt?
Maxalt Melt containing the active ingredient rizatriptan benzoate is a serotonin agonist commonly used as a painkiller to relieve migraine attacks. The medication works by narrowing the blood vessels around the brain and reduces substances in the body that can trigger nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, headache pain and other migraine symptoms. The treatment can be used to treat migraine headaches but cannot be used to treat common tension headaches.

How is Maxalt Melt used?
Maxalt Melt should be used as soon as you notice migraine symptoms or as directed by a doctor. To take the wafers, open the package and peel back the foil from the tablet blister. Do not push the wafer through the foil to prevent damaging the medication. Place the wafer in the mouth and allow it to dissolve without chewing. Swallow several times as the wafer dissolves and if desired, drink liquid to help swallow the wholly dissolved wafer. Contact a doctor for correct dosage as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the medication. If the headache persists or returns, a second wafer may be taken after at least 2 hours.

Adverse effects
Patients taking Maxalt Melt may encounter unwanted side effects such as:

  • Dry mouth
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Flushing
  • Headaches (non migraine)

Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:

  • Weakness on one side of the body
  • Mental or mood changes
  • Chest pain
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Blurred vision
  • Insomnia

Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.

Maxalt Melt is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.

The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed.
