What is Merpurin?
Merpurin containing the active ingredient mercaptopurine is considered a purine antagonist type of medication. The medication can be used alone or along with other cancer medications to treat certain types of leukemia such as acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The drug works by affecting the genetic material of the cells being produced to interfere with the growth and spread of cancer cells in the body.
How is Merpurin used?
Merpurin is usually taken orally once per day or as otherwise directed by a doctor. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken the same way each time. It should be taken with a glass of water and the patent should drink lots of fluids throughout the treatment to decrease any side effects. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patientís condition and their response to the therapy. If you need to cut the tablets, be careful not to breathe in the dust as it may be absorbed through the skin and lungs.
Patients using Merpurin may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Temporary hair loss
- Loss of appetite
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Joint pain
- Symptoms of liver disease
- Unusual bleeding or bruising
- Signs of infection
- Mouth ulcers
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Merpurin is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
