What is Metformin?
Metformin belongs to a group of medication called biguanides. It works by decreasing the amount of glucose absorbed from food and produced by the liver. It is used in combination with a proper diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Regulating blood sugar levels can help prevent kidney damage, vision problems, nerve problems, loss of limbs and sexual function problems.
How is Metformin used?
Metformin is usually taken orally 1 to 3 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The tablets should be taken with plenty of fluids along with a meal to prevent an upset stomach. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patientís condition and their reaction to the therapy. The doctor may occasionally adjust your dosage for best results.
Patients using Metformin may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Upset stomach
- Muscle pain
- Unpleasant metallic taste in mouth
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Chest pain
- Irregular heartbeat
- Blurred vision
- Tingling hands or feet
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Metformin is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed.
