What is Methimez?
Methimez containing the active ingredient methimazole is considered an anti-thyroid type of medication. It works by preventing the thyroid gland from producing excess thyroid hormone. The medication can be used to treat hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) as well as before radioactive iodine treatment or thyroid surgery.
How is Methimez used?
Methimez is usually taken orally once every 8 hours unless otherwise advised by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food along with a full glass of water but should be taken the same way every dose. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patientís condition and their response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the treatment without consulting a doctor as abruptly stopping the medication may cause the symptoms to return.
Patients using Methimez may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Upset stomach
- Hair loss
- Flu like symptoms
- Blood disorders
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Methimez is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
