What is Naloxone-ZN?
Naloxone is an emergency medication for treating cases of known narcotic overdose. It blocks and reverses signs of opioids (narcotics) including extreme drowsiness, slowed breathing, or loss of consciousness.

How is Naloxone-ZN used?
Naloxone is liquid medication. It will need to be injected into a muscle (IM injection), into a vein (IV injection) or under the skin (subcutaneous). The injection should be given by healthcare or medical provider, or if this is not possible, by somebody who has read the instructions and is competent at giving the injection.

0.4mg to 2mg should be injected. Continue to monitor the person for signs cessation of symptoms. Repeat the injection every 2-3 minutes as required.

Medical help should be sought after giving Naloxone. Make sure they are aware that naloxone has been administered.

Adverse effects
Symptoms of opioid withdrawal or narcotic withdrawal can occur when people are given Naloxone. As such, the person can expereince:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • stomach pain
  • fever
  • sweating
  • body aches
  • weakness
  • tremors
  • fast heart rate
  • pounding heartbeats
  • increased blood pressure
  • feeling nervous, restless, or irritable
  • goosebumps
  • shivering
  • runny nose
  • yawning
  • seizures
  • crying
  • stiffness
  • overactive reflexes

Tachycardia, hypotension, hypertension, dizziness and headaches can also result from taking Naloxone.

Warnings
Only use Naloxone in cases of emergency.

A person should not drive a car or perform any other activities requiring alertness or concentration as Naloxone slows reaction times and decreases alertness.

The effectiveness of narcotic pain killers will be impaired by Naloxone.

The safety of Naloxone in pregnant and breastfeeding women has not been confirmed.

People with heart disease will need to be monitored for complications if given Naloxone.
