What is Quinin?
Quinin containing the active ingredient quinine sulphate is considered an antimalarial type of medication. The medication is used in the treatment of established malarial infections, a potentially fatal infection caused by parasites passed on to humans through mosquito bites. The tablets work by attacking the parasites once they have entered the red blood cells to prevent them from multiplying. The drug can be used to treat malaria but cannot be used as a preventative measure against it. Some patients may also use the medication as a last resort to treat night time leg cramps that are causing frequent disruption of sleep.

How is Quinin used?
Quinin should be taken orally once every 8 hours for 3 to 7 days after being in a part of the world where malaria can be found. Take the medication with some food and a glass of water or milk to prevent an upset stomach. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and timeframe of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. Try to swallow the tablets whole and not chew, split or crush it to avoid the bitter taste of the tablets. Always complete the prescribed dosage as discontinuing the treatment prematurely may cause the infection to return and become resistant to antimalarials.

Adverse effects
Patients using Quinin may encounter unwanted side effects such as:

  • Headaches
  • Flushing
  • Unusual sweating
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Vomiting

Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:

  • Ringing in the ears
  • Vision
  • Cold and flu like symptoms
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Unusual bleeding
  • Irregular heartbeats

Warnings
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.

Quinin is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.

The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed.
