| Tiotropium Bromide
What is Tiova?
Tiova contains the active ingredient tiotropium bromide and is classified as an anticholinergic bronchodilator type of medication. It allows for easier breathing by relaxing the muscles around the airways. It can prevent and control symptoms such as chest tightness, coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath in patients suffering from emphysema, bronchitis or chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD). The medication is a long term treatment and should not be used to relieve sudden breathing problems.
How is Tiova used?
The Tiova capsules cannot be swallowed and needs to be inhaled using a handihaler device. The medication should be inhaled as directed by a doctor, usually once daily. Inhale twice per capsule to ensure the entire contents of the capsule has been inhaled. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the patient's condition and their reaction to the medication. Follow the doctor's instructions carefully to correctly use the inhaler. Rinse and gargle with water after using the inhaler to prevent dry mouth and throat irritation but do not swallow the rinse water.
Patients using Tiova may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Dry mouth
- Cold symptoms
- Stomach pain
- Upset stomach
- Muscle pain
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Irregular heartbeat
- Sores or white patches in mouth
- Vision problems
- Painful or difficult urination
- Chest pain
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Worsening of symptoms
The inhaler should be cleaned and allowed to air dry completely every month.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
