What is Aminophylline?
Aminophylline is considered a xanthine bronchodilator type of medication. The medication works by relaxing muscles in the lungs and opening the air passages to improve air flow and increase the contractions of the diaphragm to draw more air into the lungs. The tablets can be used to prevent and treat wheezing and trouble breathing caused by lung diseases such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema and asthma.
How is Aminophylline used?
Aminophylline is usually taken orally 2 to 4 times per day or as directed by a doctor. To prevent an upset stomach, take the medication with some food and a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patientís condition and their response to the therapy. The tablets should be swallowed whole and not broken, chewed or crushed to prevent too much of the drug from being absorbed at one time.
Patients using Aminophylline may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Upset stomach
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Stomach pain
- Irregular heartbeats
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
