What is Androcur?
Androcur containing the active ingredient cyproteron acetate belongs to a group of medication known as an anti-androgens. It will block the actions of male sex hormones and reduce the amount of sex hormones produced by the body. It can be used to control sexual desire or deviation in men who have hypersexuality. It can also be used to control prostate cancer by reducing the rate which the cancer grows and reduce symptoms and side effects caused by other treatments.
How is Androcur used?
Androcur should be taken orally as directed by a doctor, usually 1 tablet twice daily. The tablet should be taken with or just after a meal along with plenty of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the therapy. Do not discontinue the treatment without contacting a doctor as abruptly stopping the medication may lead to severe withdrawal symptoms.
Adverse effects
Patients using Androcur may encounter side effects such as:
- Fatigue
- Hot flushes
- Decreased sperm count
- Reduced volume of ejaculation
- Weight changes
- Enlargement of breasts
- Shortness of breath
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:
- Depressed mood
- Restlessness
- Liver problems
- Osteoporosis
- Abnormal production of breast milk
- Dryness of skin
Warnings
The medication is not for use in patients under 18 years of age.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Androcur is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed. |
