What is Atarax?
Atarax containing the active ingredient hydroxyzine is considered an antihistamine type of medication. The medication works by reducing some natural chemicals in the body that cause allergic reactions and is used to treat symptoms such as itching, sneezing, runny nose or hives. Some people may also use it as a sedative to treat anxiety, nausea or vomiting as well as alcohol withdrawal.
How is Atarax used?
Atarax is usually taken orally 3 to 4 times per day or as directed by a doctor. The medication can be taken with or without food but should be taken along with a full glass of water. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient's response to the therapy.
Patients using Atarax may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
- Dry mouth
- Blurred vision
- Difficulty urinating
- Trouble breathing or swallowing
- Mental or mood changes
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or worsen.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Atarax is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
