What is Metformin?
Metformin works by decreasing the amount of glucose produced by the liver or absorbed from food and restores the body’s proper response to insulin. The active ingredient metformin hydrochloride belongs to a class of drugs called biguanides and should be used with an exercise program and a proper diet to control high blood sugar. Controlling high blood sugar can help prevent sexual function problems, loss of limbs, nerve problems, blindness and kidney damage in patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

How is Metformin used?
Metformin should be taken as directed by a doctor, usually 1 to 3 times daily. The tablet should be taken with plenty of fluids along with a meal. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage as it will depend on the condition being treated and the patient’s response to the medication. To decrease the risk of side effects or an upset stomach, the doctor may prescribe a low initial dose and gradually increasing dosage to the optimal dose.

Adverse effects
Patients using Metformin may encounter unwanted side effects such as:

  • Muscle pain
  • Headaches
  • Metallic taste in mouth
  • Diarrhea
  • Upset stomach
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea

Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or encounter more severe side effects such as:

  • Hyperglycemia
  • Tingling hands or feet
  • Chest pain
  • Swelling or rapid weight gain
  • Trouble breathing
  • Blurred vision
  • Irregular heartbeat

Warnings
The medication should be used to treat patients with type 2 diabetes and should not be used to treat patients diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.

Metformin is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.

The correct dosage and prescription commonly depend on the patient and the condition being treated. Do not adjust your dosage without the approval of your health care provider. This product is only for use as prescribed and instructed.
