Mesacol containing the active ingredient mesalamine belongs to a type of medication called aminosalicylates. The medication works by reducing the amounts of certain natural substances that cause inflammation from being produced. It can be used in the prevention and treatment of various symptoms of mild to moderate ulcerative colitis such as stomach pain, diarrhea and rectal bleeding. Some people may also use the tablets to treat Crohn’s disease.

Metamide works by increasing muscle contractions in the upper digestive tract to speed the movement of food through the stomach and intestines. It is a short term relief (4 to 12 weeks) to treat heartburn and speed up the healing process of ulcers and sores in the esophagus in patients suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Patients diagnosed with diabetes may also use the tablets to treat poor emptying of their stomachs (gastroparesis).

Nexium works by decreasing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is used to treat esophagus and stomach problems such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD). It can also be used to decrease the chance for developing ulcers in patients taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) or if they have helicobacter pylori.

Omez containing the active ingredient omeprazole is considered a proton pump inhibitors (PPI) type of medication. The main function of the medicine is to decrease the production of acid in the stomach. It can be used to treat a condition where backward flow of excess acid from the stomach causes heartburn and possible injury of the esophagus called gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Decreasing the amount of acid produced can also promote faster healing of ulcers, erosive esophagitis and treat other conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
